BeginnersThe beginners gym in North Belfast

For people starting from scratch, starting again, or starting after a bad experience somewhere else.

A Level Up Fitness coach showing a member how to do a dumbbell raise

Level Up Fitness is a beginners gym in North Belfast, and we mean that as a compliment to ourselves. Most gyms are built for people who already know what they are doing. This one is built for the person who does not, and who has probably been putting it off for a while because of that.

You do not need to be fit before you come. You do not need to know what the machines are called, own the right clothes or be a certain size or age. Our members range from 14 to 73. Some had never been inside a gym. Some had joined a big one, felt lost or stared at, and quietly stopped going.

Your first weeks are simple. A coach writes a programme for where you are now, shows you every movement, and stays close while you learn it. The weights start light. When something gets easy, we move you on. If something hurts or does not feel right, we swap it.

You will train in a small group, which worries some people until they try it. The others in the room are following their own plans and many of them started exactly where you are. Read the reviews and you will see the same words again and again: welcome, comfortable, no judgement, no posers.

The usual way in is our 30 Day Beginners Programme. Message us on WhatsApp, tell us what you want to change and anything you are nervous about, and we will explain what the thirty days involve and what they cost.

“I have never set foot in a gym”

Good. Most of our members started exactly there. You do not need to know a single exercise. Your coach shows you each movement, your programme starts at your level, and nobody expects you to keep up with anyone else.

“I felt watched in big gyms”

So did a lot of the people training here now. This is a small gym where the same faces turn up each week, everyone is working through their own plan, and the coaches come over to help before you have to ask.

“I like it because you don't feel embarrassed like at the big gyms if u do the workout wrong. They come and help you.”
Jane Oetting, Google review
“There is no ego's in this gym, just craic, laughter and people celebrating each others success.”

“My knees, back or shoulders are not great”

Tell us before you start. Your programme is written around what your body can do today, and your coach will show you another way to do anything that hurts.

“Have a few issues with my knees/ mobility and didn't think going to a gym was possible. But here, Michael has been considerate and has shown me ways to do things that won't cause anymore damage or leave my knees in anymore pain”
Mary Lavery, Google review

“I always give up after a few weeks”

That is usually a planning problem, not a willpower problem. Here the plan is done for you, a coach is expecting you, and the people you train beside will ask where you were.

“The first gym I have ever stayed consistent with going to.”
Ruth Fullerton, Google review
“I had tried gym workouts in the past and found it boring and unsustainable which is a stark contrast to where I am now. I look forward to every gym session at level up”
Helen Mcilwaine, Google review
“Who knew you would be lifting weights and laughing at the same time.”

Beginners questions

Something else on your mind? Ask it on WhatsApp and a real person will answer.

Ask your own question
I have never been in a gym. Is that a problem?

No. Beginners are who we built this for. You do not need to know any exercises before you start. Everything is shown to you and your programme starts at your level. Our members range from 14 to 73.

What should I bring to my first session?

Comfortable clothes you can move in, trainers and a water bottle. There is a fridge of cold water at the gym as well. You do not need any kit of your own.

Will everyone else be fitter than me?

Some will, and it will not matter. Everyone follows their own programme, so you are never trying to keep up with the person beside you.

Am I too old or too unfit to start?

No. Our members range from 14 to 73 and plenty started with no fitness at all. Your programme is written for the body you have today.

How do I start?

Most people start with our 30 Day Beginners Programme. Message us on WhatsApp, tell us a bit about where you are at, and we will explain how it works and when you can begin.

Ready when you are. Message us.
